Open Letter to a school Pricipal December 19, 2007

Posted by globalwarmingscare in Letter to school principal on The Global Warming Scare..

This is a letter that I recently sent to a school principal.

Feel free to use this to try to stop our children from being scared to death about Global Warming.

Dear Teachers at ………………High School,

I was recently informed that your school had an academic give a lengthy presentation on the global warming crisis. I saw the notes handed out to the students and am of the considered opinion that the information given was one sided and reflected a scientific and ideological bias. The conclusions on the issue given in the presentation was that this is the greatest threat facing our generation. This is rather a large and dramatic claim to make. The influence on teenage students, still in the formative stages of shaping their world view is immense.

There are main-stream critics of the global warming debate especially on the issue on how it is presented in such a monolithic and one sided manner. I feel that in order to give students a balanced view of global warming, you owe it to them to temper the current presentation of the issue (with its apocalyptical vision for the future) with a more balanced approach.

Concerning the showing of Al Gore’s documentary on global warming, a British High Court Judge recently ruled that the “apocalyptic vision presented in the film was politically partisan and not an impartial analysis of the science of climate change”. The judge ruled that the documentary could only be shown to school children “on the condition that it was accompanied by new guidance notes for teachers to balance Mr Gore’s “one-sided” views.”

Bjorn Lomborg, , an internationally renowned academic writes “Despite our intuition that we need to do something drastic about global warming, we are in danger of implementing a cure that is more costly than the original affliction: economic analyses clearly show that it will be far more expensive to cut carbon dioxide emissions radically than to pay the costs of adaptation to the increased temperatures,” He also states in a recent article (which I have attached to this email) that “We have to rediscover the middle ground, where we can have a sensible conversation. We shouldn’t ignore climate change or the policies that could attack it. But we should be honest about the shortcomings and costs of those policies, as well as the benefits.”

Professor John R Christy, a contributor to all four major IPCC assessments, who was the lead Author in 2001 and a Contributing Author in 2007 concluded his recent article on global warming by saying that “we should always begin our scientific pronouncements with this statement: ‘At our present level of ignorance, we think we know…”

I am not denying that global warming exists. The issue at stake is that it is being presented with a doomsday zeal, which leaves little room for debate on its causes, extent, how it should be dealt with and the long-term effects for society. I trust that in the spirit of the Jewish values of free thinking and academic inquiry, and in accordance with the ethos of inclusiveness and diversity of opinion at NCJHS, that you offer the students the opportunity to hear both sides of the story. Global warming is turning out to be the issue defining the next generation. I think that you have a responsibility to prevent the students from having a dogma foisted on them.

I have included below, links to a few articles, which hopefully will broaden the scope of the debate. My hope is that this important issue will be presented in a reasoned and balanced way.

Yours faithfully
